Are you a first-time freshman entering college? There is a Dellums SMART Scholarship Program for people who want to enter college.

Applicant should try their best to submit their applications on time. There are a limited number of scholarships, so the program is unable to provide awards to all eligible candidates.

Scholarship Benefits SMART offers full tuition at any accredited U.S. college. Students get stipends from $30,000 to $46,000 per year. They do paid DoD internships in the summer. These give hands-on experience in STEM. Graduates are guaranteed a DoD job in their field.
Application Period August 1 – December 1 annually.
Encouraged Applicants Students want to attend HBCUs, M.I.s, or MSIs. Their goal is to increase diversity in DoD STEM fields. These schools help underrepresented groups get STEM degrees. Supporting these students will grow a more diverse DoD workforce.
Scholarship Goal Congressman Ronald V. Dellums was a champion of STEM education and diversity. To honor his legacy, we should expand the SMART scholarship program to include more underrepresented students. Providing these scholarships will give more opportunities to minorities and women to pursue STEM careers.
Additional Notes Applicants are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 throughout their undergraduate studies. 

There is a minimum of one year of DoD civilian service for each year of scholarship support.

Criteria and requirements of Dellums SMART Scholarship

  • Be a U.S., Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, or U.K. citizen.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field
  • Be able to complete an internship.
  • Be willing to work for the Department of Defense after graduation.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Pursue a technical undergraduate degree in one of the 24 SMART STEM disciplines.
  • Accept a one-for-one post-graduation civilian employment with the Department of Defense.
